Complicated mechanics are often an appeal in games like Honkai: Star Rail. While Genshin Impact has Elemental Reaction as its main combat mechanic, Star Rail has Toughness and Weakness Break. Breaking Weakness can immensely help Trailblazers in combat as it delays an enemy's action, deals large damage upon break, and even apply some Element's debuff on the enemy. Due to it being an impactful system, players should take note of characters that are effective at depleting an enemy's Toughness.

Other than using Skill, Ultimate, or Basic Attack to break Toughness, some characters also rely on their follow-up attacks in battle. If players wish to understand what is a follow-up attack and how to do it in Honkai: Star Rail, they can read on to learn more.

Follow-Up Attack In Honkai Star Rail

Follow-Up attack in Honkai: Star Rail is a mechanic where characters would attack automatically out of turn if certain conditions are met. This means players can’t do follow-up attacks themselves, instead they need to fulfill the requirements.

For example, Herta will perform a follow-up attack if an enemy’s HP fall to 50% or less (defeating them also counts). The instances of follow-up Herta does follow the number of enemies that fulfill this condition. For example, if players defeated three enemies at once with the Trailblazer in Honkai: Star Rail, then Herta will perform three instances of follow-up attacks.

Characters That Do Follow-Up Attacks

Other than normal follow-up attacks, counters are also considered follow-up attacks. This includes abilities like March 7th or Clara’s Talent. March counters when an ally with a shield got hit, while Clara counters when she herself is attacked.

Meanwhile, normal follow-up attacks include those performed by Himeko; she does this when three enemies are inflicted with Weakness Break. As for the unreleased Honkai: Star Rail character, Jing Yuan, he has a Lightning-Lord ability that automatically attacks every once in a while (players can see it in the turn sequence on the top left). The attack depends on the number of Lightning-Lord's Hits stacks he has, and it’s considered a follow-up attack.

Follow Up Attack Blessing In Simulated Universe

Players looking to understand follow-up attack in Honkai: Star Rail likely wonder what it means from the Simulated Universe’s Blessing. In the Simulated Universe, the Path of Elation focuses on surprises, including follow-up attacks. Unfortunately, as there are only a limited number of characters that can perform this, Blessing of Elation is often rather niche.

However, if Trailblazers are lucky enough to get the Champion’s Dinner: Cat’s Cradle blessing, then it’d be a great idea to stack more on Elation Blessings. This buff turns all Ultimate into follow-up attacks, increasing the damage by 15% (55% upon upgrade). If players focus on enhancing this Blessing, they’ll find themselves capable of effectively breaking the enemy’s Toughness, dealing large damage, stacking up lots of Crit, or even restoring Skill Points with ease.

Here are some notable Blessings of Elation players can benefit from after obtaining the Champion’s Dinner: Cat’s Cradle:

The numbers in parentheses are the stat after upgrades.

  • Twenty-First Military Rule: After launching follow-up attack, there’s a 65% (100%) chance to recover Skill Point.
  • Mostly Harmful: Increases Weakness Break efficiency of follow-up attacks by 35% (50%).
  • Suspiria: Increases follow-up attack DMG by 26% (39%).
  • Exemplary Conduct: Increases follow-up attack DMG by 9% (12%) for each Elation Blessing, max 6 (9) times.
  • Pale Fire: Increases Crit Rate of follow-up attack by 26% (39%).

Honkai: Star Rail is now available on Android, iOS, and PC. A PlayStation version is in development.
