Players who are familiar with another game in the HoyoVerse, Genshin Impact, will recognize stats like ATK, DEF, HP, Crit Rate, and Crit DMG in Honkai: Star Rail. However, being a turn-based RPG, Honkai: Star Rail introduces additional stats such as Speed, as well as some overlooked stats like Effect Hit Rate and Effect Res. This abundance of stats can be overwhelming for players when deciding which ones to prioritize and whether stats like Effect Res should receive significant attention in character building.

It is worth noting that Effect Res is a complex stat in Honkai: Star Rail, as it takes into account various factors. Players may need to consider focusing on this stat depending on the specific content they are facing.

What Is Effect RES?

Effect Res is a stat that determines the likelihood of a status effect being inflicted on a team member or an enemy in Honkai: Star Rail. Team members can enhance their Effect Res through relics, light cones, and certain Eidolons like Gepard's 4th Eidolon. On the other hand, enemies possess a base Effect Res stat that makes them more resistant to specific effects.

Different elements in the game cause different status effects, such as Sheer from the Wind element, Burn from Fire, and notably, Frozen from Ice. When calculating Effect Res, other factors come into play, including the effect hit rate of the attacker and the debuff resistance of the target. Many challenging bosses in Honkai: Star Rail, like Cocolia, have high resistance to certain status effects like Freeze.

Players should be careful not to confuse Effect Hit Rate and Effect Res, although these stats are interconnected. Effect Hit Rate increases the likelihood of a status effect being successfully applied to the target, while Effect Res reduces the chances of a status effect being inflicted on self. This means that characters can aim to have both values high or choose to focus on one, depending on the character's role and strategy.

Should Players Focus On Effect RES?

While Effect Hit Rate is particularly beneficial for Ice characters due to the usefulness of the Freeze effect in challenging content like Simulated Universe combined with the Path of Remembrance, Effect Res is not exclusive to Ice characters alone. It is advantageous for every character to have high Effect Res in order to avoid unnecessary debuffs, such as increased damage or being Frozen or Imprisoned. It's worth noting that some characters have abilities to remove debuffs from teammates easily or buff themselves (like Yanqing) or the entire team (like Gepard) to increase Effect Res.

For characters focusing on DPS roles, prioritizing stats like ATK, Speed, Crit Rate, and Crit DMG may take precedence over Effect Res since their main goal is maximizing damage output. However, characters specializing in defensive support roles, such as those from the Abundance and Preservation path, benefit significantly from high Effect Res alongside the main stat their kit is primarily scaling with. It allows them to utilize their abilities more frequently by preventing strong debuffs like Frozen, which can disrupt the action order and potentially lead to an ally or themselves being knocked down.

Honkai: Star Rail is now available on Android, iOS, and PC. A PlayStation version is in development.
