Sampo is an interesting Honkai: Star Rail character who has quite a few subtle strengths that aren't immediately noticeable. He's a DoT specialist, which means much of his potential won't be visible until after he's built up.
Even with a full set of Relics and all the right Light Cones players can find, Sampo will still need a good team comp to truly make him shine. Thankfully, there are a couple of niche-yet-accessible setups that players can use to truly bring out the best in Honkai: Star Rail's mysterious, blue-haired mercenary.
Honkai: Star Rail - Best Sampo Team Comps
Sampo is a Nihility character with a particular focus on dealing with DoT damage. He can serve as a sub-DPS for any team that needs Wind DMG or as a driver for DoT-focused teams. Either way, Sampo can deal massive damage if played correctly.
DoT Boss Melter Team
This is a DoT-centric team where Sampo serves as the primary buffer and damage dealer. It relies on inflicting as many negative status effects as possible to deal massive bursts of damage every time the enemy begins their turn. This works best in the Simulated Universe with Path of Nihility blessings.
- DPS: Sampo
- Sub-DPS: Serval
- Any Tank/Healer
- Flex slot: (Nihility preferred)
Sampo and Serval are both capable of constantly inflicting Wind Shear and Shock, respectively. The latter can also nuke down weaker targets with the raw damage of her attacks, giving this team some much-needed flexibility in both ST and AOE situations.
Any Tank or Healer can work well with this team. However, it's worth noting that Natasha can contribute to the team's DoT potential if she's built for maximum Break Effect. The Bleed DoT inflicts damage based on the target's maximum health, which means she'll synergize with Sampo's Ultimate more if she can land the final hit on an enemy's Toughness bar.
As for the last slot, players can go with anyone they have. However, this spot is best occupied by Kafka, a 5-Star Nihility unit yet to be released.
Knife Trick Break Effect Setup
Sampo's Ricochet Love skill can hit a single target multiple times. This makes him very strong against Elites and Bosses that are weak to Wind DMG, such as Aurumaton Gatekeepers and Kafka in Simulated Universe World 5.
Such a setup requires Sampo to spec into Break Effect, sacrificing his own damage to boost the effectiveness of his teammates.
- DPS: Any
- Sub-DPS: Sampo
- Support: Asta
- Tank: March 7th/Gepard
Sampo and Asta share the same strong Break potential, as both of their Skills can hit the same target multiple times. This combo is devastating against enemies with Wind and Fire weaknesses like Svarog and the Decaying Shadow Elites.
The emphasis on Break Effect here makes Sushang the top candidate for the team's DPS slot. However, players should pick a carry whose DMG type matches the enemy's weaknesses. Feel free to double down on Fire and Wind DMG if the biggest threat on the battlefield is weak to these elements.
March 7th and Gepard are the preferred Tank characters for this setup for the same reason above. Fire Trailblazer and other Preservation units can take their spot if a non-Ice character is needed for an encounter.
Honkai: Star Rail is available now on PC and mobile devices. A PlayStation version is coming soon.
