Despite her looks, Hook is actually a very strong DPS character who can be effective in almost every encounter in Honkai: Star Rail. She can blow away bosses and groups of enemies alike like a bundle of dynamite, and she has surprisingly good survivability as well.
Ever the troublemaker, Hook can take advantage of a few of the essential combat mechanics in Honkai: Star Rail. She's powerful enough to act as the main DPS in any team, but there are certain setups that bring out the best in her kit. Here are two such teams for players to try out.
Honkai: Star Rail Hook Team Comps
Hook is a Destruction character who can deal both ST and AOE damage rather reliably. She's also naturally tankier compared to other units, and she can sustain her own HP to some degree thanks to one of her Ascension passives. With enough investment and a lot of luck, Hook can take on Simulated Universe Worlds by herself. However, for general play, it's always better to have the right cast of characters supporting her from the sidelines.
Ult Charge Hypercarry Team
Hook relies on being able to use both of her abilities as often as possible to maximize her damage, especially when fighting groups of three or more. This makes her an ideal candidate for a SPD-oriented hypercarry comp featuring two Supports that can buff her offensive prowess.
- DPS: Hook
- Support 1: Tingyun
- Support 2: Bronya/Asta
- Tank: March 7th/Fire Trailblazer
Tingyun takes priority as the main Support of this team due to her ability to charge Hook's Ultimate with her own. The leader of the Moles' Ascension 6 passive grants her 5 Energy every time she uses her Ultimate while moving her next turn forward by 20%. This makes Hook work better with SPD buffs from Asta, though Bronya's Combat Redeployment can achieve the same effect.
March 7th and Fire Trailblazer are the preferred Tanks here as they can help Hook take damage. Either of these Tanks can direct aggro toward themselves, and if the enemy performs a cleaving attack, Hook will then get clipped as collateral and generate a small amount of energy for herself—such damage is often negligible since Hook can regenerate HP whenever she hits a Burning target.
The downside to this team is that it heavily relies on having Hook kitted up with the best possible Relics and Light Cones. If she can't burn through enemies quickly enough, then the team might run into survivability issues.
Double Burn Team
This team is somewhat similar to the one above, though it mostly relies on having a second character who can apply the Burn debuff on enemies. As of the launch version of Honkai: Star Rail, Hook, and Himeko are the only characters capable of doing such a thing by using abilities, but future characters might expand this setup once they're released.
- DPS: Hook
- Sub-DPS: Himeko
- Tank: March 7th/Fire Trailblazer
- Flex slot: Healer or Support
As mentioned above, Hook's full kit unlocks when her enemies are on fire—apart from her passive healing, her Talent grants her bonus ATK% and 5 Energy whenever she attacks a Burning target. Himeko can light the fuse for this interaction while simultaneously inflicting good AOE damage against every enemy on the field, though she might need some extra Effect Hit Rate for her Burns to land. Both characters benefit from attacking burning enemies, so they will naturally bounce off each other.
The fourth slot for this team is flexible, and it's up to the players to decide if they need more damage or survivability. Both Tingyun and Bronya can make Hook's own Burn stacks deal more damage while also contributing to her Ultimate's Energy regeneration. Meanwhile, a Healer like Natasha or Bailu can keep the team alive in difficult content, especially in scenarios where enemies out-level allies.
Honkai: Star Rail is now available on PC and mobile devices. A PlayStation version is in development.
