Azumarill might not look like much, but the Water/Fairy-type Pokemon has proven to be a go-to threat for Pokemon Scarlet & Violet players. Here’s how to get one and what makes it so powerful.
The Marill evolutionary line has been around since Pokemon Gold & Silver, but players haven’t necessarily appreciated how powerful it can be over time. That changed in Pokemon Scarlet & Violet as Azumarill dominated the game’s first big special event, with Azumarills tearing apart Mightiest Mark Charizard.
That said, these Azumarills didn’t just come out of nowhere. Players had to catch, raise, and evolve these Pokemon in order to get ready for the event. Each form of Azumarill can be caught in the wild, but players may be better served to raise one up themselves.
Where to Catch Azurill in Pokemon Scarlet & Violet
Azurill can be caught in Pokemon Scarlet & Violet in the areas surrounding Mesagoza. Whether players head east, west, or south out of the city, they can find Azurill. There are some additional isolated areas where the Pokemon can be found, with the full habitat page down below:
How to Get Marill in Pokemon Scarlet & Violet
Azurill evolves into Marill by raising its friendship value to 220 or higher, then leveling it up. Players can raise a Pokemon’s friendship value by leveling it up, traveling with it, participating in picnics with it, or feeding it EV-reducing berries.
If this is too tedious, Marill can be found in the wild. It appears in many of the same areas as Azurill and the areas surrounding Levincia. Here is its habitat page in the Paldean Pokedex:
How to Get Azumarill in Pokemon Scarlet & Violet
Players can get Azumarill by raising a Marill to level 18 or catching one in the wild. Azumarill can be found in and around Casseroya Lake, though it’s certainly not hard to raise a Marill up to level 18. Once players catch a Marill, they can simply add it to their party for a single battle in the late game to have it jump up past level 18.
A powerful wild Tera Pokemon can also be found in the northern half of Casseroya Lake if players want to immediately get a powerful Azumarill.
Why is Azumarill Strong?
Azumarill is more powerful than players would expect due to its great typing, strong move pool, and Huge Power ability. Though it’s meant to be a Pokemon akin to a Raticate or Linoone, Azumarill has proven to be powerful in all competitive formats.
While many similar Pokemon have underwhelming stats across the board, Azumarill’s stats are largely shifted into its defense. It has 420 combined base stats, but 260 of that is concentrated in its HP, Defense, and Sp. Defense stats. This makes it solidly bulky with a strong Fairy/Water typing that has six resistances and one immunity.
The Huge Power ability makes up for its underwhelming base Attack stat, allowing it to hit opponents hard. With access to Play Rough, Liquidation, Superpower, and Aqua Jet, it has solid enough coverage to hit most Pokemon for super-effective damage. Players can also get Belly Drum Azumarill to transform it into a deadly threat and an amazing option for winning raids.
