Wingull and Pelipper may cause the majority of Pokemon Scarlet & Violet players to shrug, but those who play ranked battles know the amazing power of the Pelican Pokemon. Naturally, that leaves them wanting to catch a Wingull to carry them through the Paldea region.

Pokemon players don’t necessarily think all that much about the series’ water fowls and that’s a bit of a shame. While Wingull and Pelipper may as well be Rattata and Raticate for many fans, the pair are much stronger than they might seem. Pokemon Scarlet & Violet players should not underestimate what Pelipper is capable of.

Players who sprint from city to city looking to get every badge in Paldea can actually miss out on finding a Wingull and Pelipper. Here is where to find them in Pokemon Scarlet & Violet and what they are capable of.

Where to Find Wingull in Pokemon Scarlet & Violet

Wingull can be found around the beaches on the southern and southwestern coasts of Paldea. The Pokemon can be seen either hopping along the shores or gliding through the air.

The quickest and easiest place to find Wingull is just outside the player’s house. If Koraidon or Miraidon already have surf ability, the player can just head south and jump off the cliff into the ocean. The player will likely be instantly greeted by at least one Wingull. Otherwise, just hang around Paldea’s beaches and a Wingull will likely pop up at some point.

How to Get Pelipper

Pokemon Scarlet & Violet players can find Pelipper along the coasts of northern and western Paldea. As with Wingull, the Pokemon can be spotted on beaches or flying over the ocean. Here is the Pokemon’s habitat page from the Pokedex:

Alternatively, players can evolve a Wingull into Pelipper themselves without much trouble. Wingull evolves into Pelipper at level 25, and it’s not unusual to find a Wingull around or above that level. Players can stick one in their party for a short time if they simply want to fill out the Pokedex page.

Is Pelipper a Good Pokemon?

With the right build and moves, Pelipper is an incredibly powerful Pokemon in the story mode and in trainer battles. This stems from Pelipper’s Drizzle ability, which automatically uses the move Rain Dance when it enters battle.

Pelipper has underwhelming base stats, but the ability to set up a weather effect just by entering battle makes covers up that frailty. Rain is powerful both offensively and defensively, limiting the power of fire-type moves and amplifying water-type moves. It also gives 100% accuracy to the powerful Thunder and Hurricane moves.

With rain active, Pelipper can hit opponents hard with Surf, Hydro Pump, and Hurricane. It also has enough bulk to shake off some attacks and either escape with U-Turn or heal with Roost. It can also use this to set up other powerful water-type Pokemon like Gyarados.

All this combines to make Pelipper a viable threat in most formats. The one area where it’s not particularly threatening is five and six-star Tera Raid battles, due to its relatively limited support options.

Pokemon Scarlet & Violet are available now on Nintendo Switch.
