The Water-type Shellos and its evolution, the Water/Ground-type Gastrodon, made its debut in Gen 4. Shellos and Gastrodon can be caught in two different forms: pink (West Sea) and blue (East Sea). Unlike its predecessor, Pokemon Sword/Shield, Pokemon Scarlet and Pokemon Violet allows its players to obtain both forms without needing to transfer from Pokemon HOME.

With over 50 Water-types in Scarlet/Violet, it's possible for trainers to completely miss the sea slug Pokemon. They'll need to be caught in order to complete the Pokedex. Fortunately, Scarlet/Violet players will only need to catch one of Shellos' (and Gastrodon's) forms to unlock their dex entry.

Where to Find West Sea Shellos and East Sea Shellos

As a Water/Ground-type, Shellos' habitats are located near bodies of water, particularly beaches. Scarlet/Violet players can find both Shellos forms at the following areas:

  • Blue Shellos (East Sea): South Province (Area 5); East Province (Area 1)
  • Pink Shellos (West Sea): West Province (Area 2).

Since Scarlet/Violet is open world, players can catch either one after departing from Naranja/Uva Academy. However, it's recommended that Koraidon/Miraidon unlock the high jump ability (which players can get by doing the Path of Legends storyline) since certain provinces may be harder to reach without it.

Shellos isn't too difficult to catch, but players may want to have the right amount of badges to make the catching process a bit easier.

  • The West Sea Shellos will be around level 28, meaning players will want to have at least two badges before trying to catch them.
  • The East Sea Shellos (South Province) are around level 22, so players can get away with just having one badge.

Players can use Net Balls when catching Shellos, since these have an increased chance of a successful capture if the Pokemon is a Water or Bug-type.

Alternatively, Shellos can be found in 2-Star Tera Raids. A 2-Star Raid means Shellos will be at level 20. Since a Terastallized Pokemon may have a different Tera Typing, Scarlet/Violet players will just have to see what the Raid-Shellos Typing is and use a Pokemon that's super effective against it.

How to Evolve Shellos & How to Catch Gastrodon

pokemon scarlet violet shellos gastrodon evolve

Shellos will evolve into Gastrodon at level 30. Once it becomes Gastrodon, it gains the Ground-typing as well, making it Water/Ground-type. This makes it immune to Electric-type moves, but gains a x4 weakness to Grass-type moves instead.

Teach Gastrodon the Poison-type move Sludge Bomb (via TM 148) to counter (most) Grass-type Pokemon.

Gastrodon's base stat spread are the following:

Stat

Base Stat No.

Base Stat Total

HP

111

475

Attack

83

Special Attack

92

Defense

68

Special Defense

82

Gastrodon isn't meant to be an Attacker and works better as a Defensive Pokemon. It can learn the move Recover to heal itself and has access to powerful moves such as Earth Power (Ground-type) and can even learn Ice-type moves such as Ice Beam through TMs. Although slow, it's immunity to Electric-type moves means it can battle most Electric-type Pokemon that Water-types would struggle against.

Both the West and East Sea Gastrodon can be caught in 4 Star Tera Raids (level 45) with a small chance of having their Hidden Ability, Storm Drain. If Gastrodon has Storm Drain, then it can't be damaged by Water-type moves and will instead have its Special Attack increased by one stage.

Gastrodon can also be caught in the wild at the following locations:

  • West Sea Gastrodon: Casseroya Lake
  • East Sea Gastrodon: North Province (Area 1)

It should be noted that West and East Sea Shellos and Gastrodons do not have any stat differences. They also have access to the same TMs. This means Scarlet & Violet players should just catch Shellos/Gastrodon based on whichever look/color they prefer.

Pokemon Scarlet and Pokemon Violet are available for Nintendo Switch.
