One of the most significant new additions to the national Pokedex in Pokemon Sword & Shield was the Rolycoly evolution line. The fire-rock evolutionary line returns in Pokemon Scarlet & Violet, adding an interesting mix of offensive and defensive potential.

While Garganacl has been one of the standout new Pokemon of gen nine, it’s not the only three-stage rock Pokemon in Pokemon Scarlet & Violet. Coalossal returns from the Galar region and can batter opponents that aren’t prepared for it.

The Pokemon proved capable of winning championships in Pokemon Sword & Shield, and it still has plenty of potential in the newer games as well. Here’s how to get it and how to make use of it.

How to Catch Rolycoly and Carkol

Rolycoly can be found and captured in East Province Area Three, the craggy region north of Levincia. The Pokemon is a fairly common spawn in this area and is easy to spot in this dusty locale.

Rolycoly’s evolution, Carkol, can also be found in this area. Rolycoly and Carkol share the same habitat, though Carkol is the rarer spawn of the two. They may appear in packs together, so it’s relatively easy to add both to the Pokedex in quick succession.

How to Get Coalossal in Pokemon Scarlet & Violet

Players will need to evolve a Carkol in order to get a Coalossal in Pokemon Scarlet & Violet. This can be done by raising up a Carkol to 34. Coalossal does not spawn in the wild, meaning players will have to put some effort into getting one.

The only way to get a Coalossal without evolving a Carkol is to get one in a five-star Tera Raid battle. Players will need to get a bit lucky in order to find a Coalossal raid, as it is one of the dozens of Pokemon that appear in five-star raids. Those who are looking to quickly add it to their Pokedex ought to simply evolve a Carkol instead of scrounging around for raids.

Is Coalossal a Good Pokemon?

Coalossal can be a threatening Pokemon in double battles and is a solid option in Tera Raid battles. The Pokemon is fairly powerful in the story but can be annoying to use due to its low speed stat that can make escaping battle difficult.

Pokemon Coalossal

Coalossal’s strength in double battles stems from the combination of Weakness Policy and the Steam Engine item. Players can partner Coalossal with a Pokemon like Iron Bundle to hit it with a weak water move like Flip Turn. This will raise Coalossal’s speed six stages and its attack stats two stages, immediately making it much more threatening.

The lack of Dynamax does hurt Coalossal as it had a particularly threatening Gigantamax form, but it also greatly benefits from Terastallization. Players can change its Tera Type to rock or fire to up its damage and reduce its susceptibility to water moves or go with something else entirely to add coverage after activating Weakness Policy and Steam Engine.

Pokemon Scarlet & Violet are available now on Nintendo Switch.
