In Pokemon Scarlet and Violet, a number of items that can be held by Pokemon have a variety of uses that goes beyond a boost in damage or defensive abilities. Some items play the role of support, setting up certain strategies with their effects that players can take advantage of the increase their chances of winning the battle. The benefits of these items depend much more on how the item is utilized than with some other held items whose effects may be more obvious.

Light Clay

The Light Clay is a held item that can be utilized by supportive Pokemon on the player's team to increase its ability to aid and protect other Pokemon on the team. It does this by increasing the number of turns that the moves Reflect and Light Screen remain active, allowing players to utilize these moves for longer than they would otherwise be able to and to avoid having to use turns to re-apply the effect.

Reflect and Light Screen have the effect of reducing the damage taken by the team of Pokemon that are allied to the Pokemon that used the move. On their own, Reflect and Light Screen will last for 5 turns once they have been used, acting as defensive barriers that reduce the damage that physical or special moves do, respectively. With the Light Clay in hand, these moves will add 3 turns to its normal duration, causing these moves to last for 8 turns instead of 5.

Light Clay Held

While 5 turns is a significant amount of time in average Pokemon battles, 8 turns of these moves can all but guarantee that these moves will last for the duration of any battle against any trainer that can be encountered in the Pokemon Scarlet and Violet. Factoring in multiplayer, it can still be helpful for certain strategies for any support Pokemon to cause these moves to last longer.

Players can follow the road from Cortondo as it winds through the windmills and mountains to the north-west, before the road eventually turns back to the north-east, leading to the beautiful city that is home to the Water type Gym Leader Kofu.

Light Clay

Upon reaching the town, players can utilize the large elevators present to approach the top level of the city if they are not already there. Once on the top level, players that move to the east end of the city will find the Delibird Presents, where they can buy a Light Clay for an expensive 20,000 Pokedollars. This will allow players to utilize the extra time granted to either Light Screen or Reflect to aid in their strategies in battle.
