The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt has just reached an important milestone by selling over 50 million units since its launch. The title is the biggest hit CD Projekt Red has ever released, as The Witcher 3 was hailed as one of the best single-player RPG experiences in 2015, cementing its place in the most successful games of the last decade.

CD Projekt Red managed to get a considerable amount of success with The Witcher 1 and 2, despite somewhat buggy releases, but it really hit the jackpot on its third attempt at the franchise. By trying to create a sprawling open-world game for the first time, the developers crafted a 100-hour titan that had several memorable quests and a thrilling storyline. The result is that The Witcher 3 surpassed six million sales in only six weeks. However, the game did not slow down in sales so much over time, continuing to be quite a successful title as its expansions were launched, together with several free DLC with small missions.

Now, CD Projekt Red has recently revealed that The Witcher 3 has sold over 50 million copies so far. While it’s not a secret that The Witcher 3 is one of the most successful games of all time, it’s quite surprising that the game is still selling well eight years after its release. Around a year ago, the developer stated that The Witcher 3 managed to sell 40 million units, which means that around 10 million were sold in a single year.

Part of the reason for the game’s enduring popularity may be the fact that The Witcher 3 is still receiving updates. The next-gen version of the title received a few updates this year, fixing a few performance issues, and improving the game’s visual quality, which was already excellent from the start, but it looks better with ray tracing. Another reason for the spike in sales may lie in the Witcher series made by Netflix, which already had two seasons and has been a huge hit, too, introducing even more people to the saga’s universe.

Gamers don’t seem to want to abandon the game, either. Despite it being a single-player title with not so much to do after one finishes all the content, a few players find ways to keep having fun. For instance, one gamer reached an absurd amount of time playing The Witcher 3, doing it for over 4,450 hours, with over 600 of them being dedicated to playing the card game Gwent.

The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt is available now for PC, PS4, PS5, Switch, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X/S.
