The devs behind Final Fantasy 16 have recently unveiled the Active Time Lore, a feature that reminds players about the game’s story and was only added after even some developers could not understand the whole game. Final Fantasy 16 is one of the most awaited RPGs of 2023, and this feature will certainly help players to have a better experience with it due to its complicated story.

Final Fantasy 16 is set to be one of the most ambitious JRPGs ever due to its colossal story. Gamers will follow its protagonist Clive while he lives through three different ages in his quest for revenge. According to the developers, FF16 will have eleven hours of cutscenes alone, and have a complex world that is currently facing a political crisis. So, it’s fair to say that it will be a game with a complex story, and the developers are fully aware that some gamers may need a hand to understand it well.

The new Active Time Lore system will allow Final Fantasy 16 players to pause the game at any time, especially during cutscenes, and gain more information about locations, characters, or events that currently relate to the scene. In an interview with Polygon, Square Enix producer Naoki Yoshida revealed that the team always wanted to create a grand-scale story, but they eventually discovered one problem with this approach. After reading the script for all the developers of the title back in 2019, some of them simply didn’t understand it and were very confused about what was going on. If even the developers who were working were struggling to understand the story, a system to help gamers seemed necessary.

Aside from the Active Time Lore system, Yoshida also confirmed that some in-game characters may also help players who feel lost in the lore during Final Fantasy 16’s three-part story. For instance, in the game’s base, it’s possible to find a political scholar that may explain the current state of the world’s politics or scholars who share lore.

Fans who are eager to play Final Fantasy 16 and know more about its story have some good news, too. Square Enix recently confirmed the release of a full-length FF16 demo before the launch, which will feature a few hours of content and focus on Clive’s youth. However, despite the fact that there is only one month left before the game’s launch, Square Enix didn’t release an exact date for when the demo will be available.

Final Fantasy 16 launches on June 22 for PS5.
