Part of The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom requires the player to descend into the Depths, a brand-new map that spans the entirety of Hyrule. The Depths can be accessed through gloom-infested chasms that have appeared all over the map.

The main problem for players eager to explore the Depths is Gloom - the floors and walls are coated in it, and the sinister substance has corrupted the monsters within. Here's everything players need to know about avoiding and restoring gloom damage in Tears of the Kingdom.

What is Gloom in Tears of the Kingdom?

Zelda Tears of the Kingdom Gloom Spawn

Gloom in Tears of the Kingdom is the equivalent of Breath of the Wild's Malice - a malevolent, sometimes living force of evil overtaking Hyrule. Even touching it causes damage to Link, and in the case of Gloom, those hearts cannot be restored while in the Depths. The Depths is an area in the game overrun by Gloom, so knowing how to heal it is a must.

How To Recover Gloom Damage

First Things in Zelda TotK- Gloom

Seeing that heart container break is definitely concerning, but there's no need to worry. Here are the easiest ways to recover heart containers lost to gloom:

Using Lightroots

Activating Lightroots will restore heart containers lost from the effects of Gloom, though it will not heal the actual hearts themselves. The same goes for standing underneath already-activated Lightroots.

Going Back to the Surface

Returning to the surface at any point will restore heart containers lost to the effects of Gloom, but again, will not restore the actual health itself. This effect works anywhere on the surface, so players can easily warp out of the Depths if they're having significant trouble with Gloom Damage.

Cooking with Sundelions

Any dish cooked with Sundelions grants the modifier 'Sunny' - a new modifier that means a dish will restore hearts lost by gloom. There's an entire TotK Side Quest dedicated to healing a Kakariko shop owner afflicted with Gloom Sickness, keying the player into the Gloom-Restoring effects of the Sundelion.

Sundelions can be found in the Sky Islands, specifically abundant in the areas above Gerudo and Akkala. It seems they favor hot climates. Players should always pick Sundelions when they see them because they can be useful in situations like this.
