Many consider Minecraft to be the ultimate sandbox video game experience, with the huge success of the release speaking for itself. By giving players an unprecedented amount of freedom, the title has developed a reputation for creativity among its bustling community.

With that being said, there are many aspects of Minecraft that can still be improved. In particular, there are very few in-game mechanics that are curated around home-making, despite this being one of the most popular elements of the release. In particular, the in-game furniture for Minecraft is practically nonexistent, with fans resorting to a range of methods to give the illusion of decor. While it can be argued that this gives Minecraft its charm, it seems time for Mojang to finally revamp furnishing within the title.

The Current State of Minecraft Furniture

Minecraft Tiny Homes Cover

A major milestone of any Minecraft playthrough comes when a player finally builds a permanent home. Away from the usual dirt huts that are made towards the start of a playthrough, a permanent Minecraft house is usually a great point of pride and dedication. Players often go through great effort to build their homes in the most aesthetic manner, with this ethos extending to the interior of a structure.

While things like doors, windows, and paintings can be placed, there is a real lack of official furniture for players to use. Beyond beds, most of the "furniture" present in Minecraft houses come from an odd mix-and-match of other building blocks. For example, couches and chairs are usually made from single blocks of stairs, with tables being made of fence posts and wooden slabs.

This has become the norm for Minecraft, yet there is a clear player-driven desire for real in-game furniture. This is evident in the PC mods for Minecraft, in which hundreds of creators have curated proper in-game furniture for people to use. Given how complex other aspects of Minecraft have become over the years, it is a wonder that Mojang has not yet addressed furniture in the way it deserves.

How Minecraft Furniture Could Work

Minecraft New Spin-Off Genres

While the demand for proper furniture in Minecraft is clear, it would have to be implemented in the correct way to be successful. It seems best that furniture should be the focus of its own dedicated update, with Minecraft updates usually having an overarching theme. This would give dedicated furniture the attention it deserves, while allowing players to immediately show off detailed creations. As well as giving a huge aesthetic boost to home interiors, this new furniture could also possess mechanic functionality.

For example, an update like this could allow for players to actually sit on couches and chairs by interacting with them. While a seemingly small change, functionality such as this would do wonders for making spaces feel full and lived-in. This line of thinking could extend to things like functional cupboards and tables that can have items placed on them, re-writing the home experience of Minecraft.

With recent Minecraft updates focusing on caves and outdoor exploration, it is time for interiors to receive some dedicated attention. Players have been waiting for the likes of custom paintings in Minecraft for some time, and there is surely enough interest to warrant such an update. While the current iterations of furniture is a testament to the resourcefulness of Minecraft players, it is time for dedicated and functional furniture to appear in-game.

Minecraft is available on Mobile, PC, PS4, Switch, Xbox One, and legacy platforms.
