World of Warcraft: Dragonflight has placed the spotlight on the game’s dragons, fleshing out their pasts and now, revealing their futures. The most intriguing plot lines revolve around the Black Dragonflight and their complex and difficult journey following the events of World of Warcraft: Cataclysm. The most pressing matter that both NPCs and players alike have been waiting for is who will be the next Black Aspect.

Each of the five dragonflights in World of Warcraft is led by an Aspect, the embodiment of their cause and a bastion of that flight’s domain. Over the years, their power has dwindled, and they are no longer the near god-like beings they once were. Regardless, they remain determined to uphold their oath to protect Azeroth. The Black Dragonflight, however, has been leaderless ever since the fall of Deathwing, but now a new candidate has stepped forth.

World of Warcraft Has Finally Put Deathwing's Terrible Legacy To Rest

Ebyssian and Emberthal World of Warcraft Embers of Neltharion

The impression that most players have been under all throughout World of Warcraft: Dragonflight is that the choice of Black Aspect rests between two dragons, Wrathion and Sabellian. Both are natural-born charismatic leaders who believe they are owed their father’s legacy. However, Wrathion’s youth and impetuousness often lock horns with Sabellian’s experience and ambition, and the two have become staunch rivals in the past few months.

Naturally, many players picked their favorites, as Dragonflight allows them to pledge assistance to either Wrathion or Sabellian each week. But as interesting and worthy as either of these obvious candidates might be, another black dragon has entered the story. His name is Ebyssian, also known as Ebonhorn, and players were first introduced to him in World of Warcraft: Legion. He hatched some ten millennia ago, his egg purified from corruption by the Highmountain Tauren. He served as their seer ever since, but now his stake in Azeroth’s future has led him to the Dragon Isles.

Ebyssian is nothing like his brothers. His winning traits are wisdom, patience, and kindness. He values camaraderie and helping others, believing compassion to be a dragon’s most useful tool. With not a single thought of being Aspect himself, he decided to help the Dracthyr leader, Scalecommander Emberthal, to save her people and uncover her past. He made her understand that, just like him, she owed nothing to a legacy that she did not choose for herself.

Aside from securing allies in both the Horde and the Dracthyr, Ebyssian understands how much his own squabbling brothers need each other. He tempers their boldness with caution and douses their fiery tempers with his calming words. It was little surprise to everyone but Ebyssian himself, that at the end of the Aberrus raid, all the dragons involved unanimously voted for Ebyssian to act as the next Black Aspect and lead his broken family into a brighter future.

Both Wrathion and Sabellian came to realize that they did not need to be Aspect to achieve their dreams and that the best thing for the Black Dragonflight was a leader who was nothing like the last. Deathwing, formerly Neltharion, left deep scars upon all of Azeroth, dragonkind most especially. He led his flight down a path defined by suffering and madness, and the black dragons that survived have sworn to never repeat his mistakes. Ebyssian is the future that they deserve, and he has accepted it with humble determination.

The events to follow this revelation of the new Black Aspect are yet unknown. World of Warcraft: Dragonflight has left its newest raid, Aberrus the Shadowed Crucible, ending with all the dragonflights ready to defend their world in unity. The five new Aspects have not yet regained their full power, but they have never before been so united since the day the Titan Keeper Tyr charged the dragons with Azeroth’s protection. Ebyssian will soon replace his father’s memory entirely, and the black dragonflight will remain as noble guardians of the earth.

World of Warcraft: Dragonflight is available now for PC.
