Iron Gate cleared up its stance regarding Valheim mods, shedding some light on a topic many players have discussed. Valheim enthusiasts have sunk many hours into the game, and some have developed custom additions, shaping the experience and looking to improve or change what players can and cannot do. Now, they know how developers feel about it.

Valheim launched in 2021 in early access, and since then, it has captivated many gamers with its graphical style, fun gameplay, and enticing building mechanics. The game was developed by Iron Gate Studios, and not too long ago, Valheim was added to Xbox Game Pass, allowing gamers from Xbox One and Xbox Series X/S to enjoy the title that still gathers more than twenty thousand players each month on Steam. Some gaming communities are known for having talented people that put their creativity to the test and share it with other players, sometimes getting compensated for it.

On May 29, Valheim's developers made an official statement about their stance regarding mods on the game's official Steam page, clearing things up for all players curious about their opinion. According to the development team, they appreciate the effort gamers put into creating their content. Still, they do not offer official mod support to the game, meaning Iron Gate does not guarantee mods will work with future versions of the game and that players will use and create mods at their own risk. Gamers have created many Valheim mods in the past, so developers must wait for the community's response to this recent statement.

Valheim's developers also touched on a couple more subjects regarding paid mods and clarity regarding modding the game. According to the developers, they do not condone locking modded content behind a paywall, stating all Valheim modded content should be free for all players as they think it is against the spirit of creativity and modding. Iron Gate is also against developers offering gamers free-to-play versions of a mod and locking away content behind a paywall.

Iron Gate also wants developers to clarify that their mods are not official, as many modded servers force players to automatically download mods as soon as they join the server. Iron Gate wants to avoid confusing players that may wonder if they are playing an official or modded game version. Valheim has a feature that triggers an in-game pop-up letting players know their game is running with a mod. Game mods allow players to customize the experience in new and intriguing ways, and many of them like to express their creativity and share it with the community. Now Valheim mod developers know what the development studio thinks about their work.

Valheim is available now on PC, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X/S.
