The Nintendo Switch has proven to be an incredibly popular console with a wide range of available titles. Whether players are looking for unique indie gems, Nintendo's massive IP, or remasters of some of their favorite older games, the Switch likely has a couple of games available for everyone. While there are still many games that players are hoping to see announced for the console, like a more expansive virtual console, Nintendo has made great efforts to support the Switch with a lineup of great games.

Many games released on it have already been genre-defining, like Breath of the Wild and Mario Odyssey. However, Nintendo still has a lot more planned for the Switch, including some of its own massive AAA games and titles from other studios. Whether players are looking forward to some great mini-games or a JRPG, Nintendo has them covered with these in-development AAA Switch games.

Updated March 3, 2023 by Mark Sammut: Triple-A Nintendo Switch games might not come around every day, but they always feel special when they do. What games are set to launch on the system in 2023?

Fatal Frame: Mask of the Lunar Eclipse

In 2008, Fatal Frame: Mask of the Lunar Eclipse was released on the Nintendo Wii exclusively in Japan. Western audiences have had to wait more than a decade to get their hands on this entry in Koei Tecmo's classic horror franchise. As the gameplay was originally designed around the Wii Remote and Nunchuk, Mask of the Lunar Eclipse will naturally undergo some alterations to suit modern consoles, including the Nintendo Switch. Although reviews were scarce, the Wii version garnered a mostly positive reception.

Bayonetta Origins: Cereza And The Lost Demon

Announced out of nowhere at the 2022 Game Awards, Bayonetta Origins: Cereza and the Lost Demon is a prequel that dives into the eponymous Umbra Witch's early years. The spin-off shakes things up significantly from previous entries, offering a story-book art style, a top-down perspective, and (seemingly) simplified combat. Considering Bayonetta 3 came out towards the end of 2022, Cereza and the Lost Demon's March 2023 release is quite a quick turnaround, especially for Platinum's franchise.

Minecraft Legends

Once upon a time, Minecraft was considered "indie," but that is no longer the case in 2023. In fact, Mojang's franchise is among the biggest names in all gaming, and the license is spreading to other genres. Minecraft Legends immortalizes an ancient in-universe myth about a hero who rose up to protect the world from the threat imposed by the Nether. Unlike the main game that focuses on crafting and player freedom, Minecraft Legends is an action strategy title centering around forming connections with NPCs. That said, base building will be a feature.

The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom

The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild sequel is unquestionably the most highly-anticipated AAA Switch games. Originally announced as a 2022 release, Tears of the Kingdom has been delayed until May 2023. Pikmin 4

It has been a long time coming, but Pikmin 4 officially has a release date. The first proper home console sequel since 2013's third entry, the upcoming Switch game looks set to tweak the franchise's formula rather than re-invent it. That said, Pikmin 4 will include a few new mechanics and changes, so veterans can look forward to an evolution rather than just a continuation. Visually, the project looks impressive so far, and it could easily prove to be among the most gorgeous games on the Switch. Pikmin 4 will also support co-op multiplayer.

Hogwarts Legacy has dominated the gaming landscape since its February 2023 release on PC, PS5, and Xbox Series X/S. The game is also in development for last-gen systems and the Nintendo Switch, with the latter set to be the last version to debut. Considering Avalanche's title is a reasonably big and beautiful open-world game, the fact a Switch port is in development is surprising. Only a handful of modern AAA third-party projects try to fit Nintendo's console into their development, and Hogwarts Legacy will almost certainly need to make some serious concessions to fit on the hybrid system.

Baten Kaitos 1 & 2 HD Remaster

During the February 2023 Nintendo Direct, the publisher announced a compilation containing remasters of Baten Kaitos: Eternal Wings and the Lost Ocean and Baten Kaitos Origins. Originally released on the GameCube, these JRPGs are still highly-regarded to this day, even if they are not as well-known as IPs like Final Fantasy or Xenoblade Chronicles. Combined, these games should offer more than 100 hours of content, and that is if someone focuses almost exclusively on the main quests.

Marvel's Midnight Suns

A Marvel-themed tactical RPG by the same studio behind the XCOM games, Midnight Suns allows players to create their own superhero called The Hunter and then play alongside the likes of Captain America and Wolverine. Featuring a turn-based combat system, RPG elements, and base-upgrading mechanics, Marvel's Midnight Suns could end up being one of the best tactics games on the Switch. While scheduled to debut on October 7, 2022, on PC, PS5, PS4, Xbox Series X/S, and Xbox One, Midnight Suns' Switch release date has not been announced.

Metroid Prime 4 was announced by Nintendo what feels like ages ago. However, the company has confirmed that the game is still happening, so fans simply have to be patient.

Rumored: Mario Kart 9

mario kart 9 switch

The Switch does already have Mario Kart 8 Deluxe, but it has been long enough since that game's release that rumors have begun circulating about a Mario Kart 9. A sequel will undoubtedly happen, as the series is a popular staple of Nintendo's IP, so fans will just have to see how long it takes to become a reality. In the February 2022 Direct, Nintendo announced the Booster Course Pass for Mario Kart 8 Deluxe, suggesting that a sequel still has a long way to go (if it is even in development).
