The Nintendo Switch's firmware has been updated yet again. Unlike most updates, however, this one is rather unsubstantial, simply being a small change to the existing Version 16.0.3.

These days, it's standard procedure for console manufacturers to release updates to their hardware in the event that glitches are discovered, or just to keep things up to date before they spiral out of control. The Nintendo Switch has been updated fairly regularly since its launch in March 2017, with most changes falling under the "stability and performance tweaks" category, which tend to be released right before a new game releases. That said, some surprises have been thrown in, such as the ability to sort software into folders or completely customize one's button mapping. Not to mention the influx of new Switch icons and wallpapers that drop with each new game.

This tweak to Version 16.0.3 is quite minor compared to previous changes that have been made. It doesn't require a system restart to install, and it doesn't even have any official patch notes revealed by Nintendo. Instead, dataminer OatmealDome revealed the details of the patch on their professional Twitter account. The sole notable change introduced in this update was the removal of the word "ADHD" from the Japanese bad words list, a total reversal of a change made in Version 16.0.2. According to OatmealDome, "rebootless" updates such as this one usually don't include general stability improvements.

Nintendo has always prided itself on being the family-friendly alternative to Sony and Microsoft, at least in terms of its first-party content. Many of its games and even the systems themselves have barred swear words in instances where the player could enter their own text, although some games such as Tomodachi Life had loopholes and Miitopia flat-out allowed swearing in character catchphrases. But with "ADHD" not technically being a swear word, it remains unclear as to why the term was even blacklisted to begin with. Perhaps the company originally wanted to stop seeing it used as an insult, but decided it wasn't worth the trouble after seeing how many people love to embrace their uniqueness.

At any rate, it is worth noting that the Nintendo Switch has been updated numerous times this May, a month defined by the release of The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom. But with that game's release being weeks ago, perhaps more updates are on the way soon, possibly hinting at or gearing up for more games or even an update on the long-rumored Switch successor. But knowing Nintendo's predictable nature, only time will tell what comes next.
