Steam is giving away Warhammer 40,000: Gladius - Relics of War to PC gamers for free for a limited time. This free-to-keep turn-based strategy game based on the very popular Warhammer 40,000 tabletop wargame is praised by some fans of the series while criticized by others.
Warhammer 40,000 was first created by Games Workshop in 1987. The well-designed board game quickly gained popularity thanks to the high-quality miniatures and the strategic gameplay, and thanks to the success of Warhammer 40,000: Darktide, the Warhammer brand is quickly becoming a household name. For PC players who want to catch up on the series, they can now pick up one of the older games in the series for free.
During Steam’s Warhammer Skulls: Festival of Video Games sale, 2018’s Warhammer 40,000: Gladius - Relics of War is now free, until June 1. Warhammer 40,000: Gladius - Relics of War is a turn-based strategy game based in the world of Warhammer 40,000, where the player must choose to join one of four factions in order to win the rights over the planet’s resources.

Relics of War is a much different game compared to the new and popular Warhammer 40,000: Boltgun, or Darktide. Instead of a fast-paced first-person shooter, Relics of War is for gamers who play slightly slower-paced games and enjoy exploring randomly generated worlds while constructing fortifications to expand the empire. The four playable factions in the base game are the Orks, Space Marines, Necrons, and Astra Militarum. The play style is comparable to a darker version of the Civilization series.
Over the years, Steam has given away a lot of free games, some of them have been hits, and some of them have been misses. When it comes to this particular Warhammer game, the reviews have been “mostly positive,” with fans praising the turn-based battles and the depths of the mechanics, while others claim that there is no story and the action is clunky. Thankfully, this game is free to pick up until June 1, giving gamers plenty of time to decide if they want to get into this rising series.
At this point, it’s obvious that Games Workshop is going all out with the Warhammer property, especially with the recent news of a Warhammer television show helmed by Henry Cavill.
