The new survival action RPG Ecumene Aztec was just announced, and it will let gamers play as an Aztec warrior during the Spanish invasion of Central America in the 16th century. With gameplay that strongly resembles the original games of the Assassin’s Creed franchise, this seems to be an exciting new title for people looking for great stealth games.

Ecumene Aztec is being developed by Giantscraft, and it appears to be the first game developed by the indie studio. From the gameplay perspective, it’s clear that the game was hugely inspired by the first Assassin’s Creed titles in the series. Mesoamerica in the 16th is a location that Assassin's Creed fans never visited, so it could potentially be an ideal place for a new game that seems to be heavily inspired by the franchise.

In the upcoming Ecumene Aztec, players will defend the land of the Aztecs against the Spanish conquistadors. The trailer shows a bit of the gameplay, which mixes Assassin’s Creed-inspired stealth and action sections with a few survival elements. The protagonist can scale walls, stealth kill enemies, but also craft traps to get opponents unseen, or gather ingredients in the jungle. The gameplay looks somewhat rough at the moment, but the title is still in development, so both the graphics and the controls should be improved over time. Also, it’s an indie title, not a full-blown AAA, which is something to consider when tempering one’s expectations.

According to the developers, players will be able to pick between three separate classes when playing: the Jaguar, Snake, or Eagle. Each one will have different skill trees focused on distinct kinds of gameplay. Also, gamers may be able to explore forests, temples, and a dense Mesoamerican city while looking for Spanish invaders to kill. They may also make blood sacrifices for the Gods to upgrade their characters. The game is set to be released on Steam in 2024, and it’s still early in development at the moment.

While fans wait for the release of Ecumene Aztec, they can play Assassin’s Creed Mirage, which will be out on October 12. AC Mirage promises to be a return to the roots of the franchise, starring a setting that is quite similar to the one in the first game of the series. According to the current details that have been released so far, the title will offer a much more focused experience instead of a sprawling open-world RPG like the three previous mainline titles and focus on stealth once more.

Ecumenic Aztec will be released for PC in 2024.
