Hogwarts Legacy gives players the chance to add the all three Unforgivable Curses to their arsenal of spells, but getting them all is a lengthy process. Hogwarts Legacy players will have to put in some serious playtime to get the Unforgivable Curses, especially Avada Kedavra, which isn't obtainable until fairly late in the game.

The three Unforgivable Curses in Harry Potter are Crucio, Imperio, and Avada Kedavra, and all three are available to Hogwarts Legacy players. Crucio subjects the victim to extreme torture, while Imperio puts them under the control of the spellcaster. Avada Kedavra, aka the Killing Curse, is perhaps the most infamous of all the Unforgivable Curses, killing whoever is hit with it in an instant. Those playing a "good" character in Hogwarts Legacy may not want to collect these spells, but those don't mind shoving their principles aside to get a serious advantage in combat will definitely want to seek them out.

All three Unforgivable Curses in Hogwarts Legacy are obtained by playing through Sebastian Sallow's series of quests. Sabastian Sallow is the Slytherin companion that players can befriend in Hogwarts Legacy. Like the other companions in the game, Sebastian has his own distinct story and side quests, and they come with their own unique rewards. Sebastian's quests become available as players go through the game and will be clearly marked on the map and in the Field Guide, so it's hard to miss them. At various points in Sebastian's story, players will get the opportunity to learn the three Unforgivable Curses, after which they are free to use them against any enemies they come across in Hogwarts Legacy.

Players first get the Crucio curse by completing the Sebastian Sallow quest "In the Shadow of the Study." Later, they will have the chance to unlock Imperio by completing "In the Shadow of Time." And finally, Hogwarts Legacy players can unlock Avada Kedavra by completing the quest "In the Shadow of the Relic," one of the last quests that they will have to complete in order to finish up Sebastian's storyline.

How Does Avada Kedavra Work in Hogwarts Legacy?

In Hogwarts Legacy, the Unforgivable Curses function much like they do in the books and movies, except Imperio. Crucio tortures opponents and Avada Kedavra kills, but players don't get direct control of anyone they hit with Imperio. Instead, Imperio has been tweaked slightly in Hogwarts Legacy so those hit by it will temporarily fight on the side of the player, turning against their allies and generally causing chaos.

Avada Kedavra is particularly useful in Hogwarts Legacy, as the developers didn't nerf it for the sake of balance. Hogwarts Legacy troll fights can be pretty long, but all the trolls in the game can be killed instantly with a single blast from Avada Kedavra. Even the late-game boss fights can be completed in a matter of seconds if one is willing to use Avada Kedavra, so it's certainly one of the most useful spells in the game and worth going through the trouble of obtaining.

Hogwarts Legacy launches February 10 for PC, PS5, and Xbox Series X, April 4 for PS4 and Xbox One, and July 25 for Nintendo Switch.
