Learning spells is one of the most exciting parts of playing Hogwarts Legacy, as each one greatly expands what the player is able to do both in combat and exploration. Descendo is a spell that players will get to see in action early on, with Professor Fig using it to great effect against the enemies at Gringotts Bank in the tutorial. However, the player won't be able to learn Descendo for themselves without progressing through the story a bit first.
Descendo is a Force spell, which, as the name implies, pushes enemies and objects to the ground violently. Though not particularly effective at dealing damage in combat, it's still a very fun spell to use. As with all other spells in Hogwarts Legacy, players will need someone to teach them Descendo before they are able to make use of it. In this case, the role of teacher goes to Professor Onai, Natty's mother and Divination professor at Hogwarts. The other fifth years will have already learned Descendo, so Professor Onai teaches it to the player after class in conjunction with some additional assignments.
Completing Professor Onai's Assignment
In order to unlock the quest for Professor Onai's Assignment, players must first complete Percival Rackham's trial. After doing this, they should receive an owl from the professor explaining some tasks that must be completed before she will teach them Descendo. In this case, players must do the following:
- Collect 1 Troll Bogey
- Cast Depulso on a Levitated Enemy
Casting Depulso on a levitated enemy should be simple enough, with players just needing to equip both to the same spell set and use them on an enemy in quick succession. By contrast, collecting a Troll Bogey can be tough, namely because it involves finding and beating a troll.
Trolls can be found in Troll lairs, which appear like small mountain symbols on the map. There are several in the Feldcroft region and some trolls can be found near the Coastal Cavern. Alternatively, if players haven't completed the quest yet, there is a guaranteed troll spawn at the end of Horklump Hollow.
How to Learn Descendo in Hogwarts Legacy
After completing Professor Onai's Assignment, players should head to the Divination classroom and watch the short cutscene. They'll then need to complete the minigame by pressing the buttons at the correct times and keeping the cursor pointing down the pattern shown on the screen. Once this is done, players will have Descendo added to their spell list permanently. Descendo can then be equipped to any space on the player's spell sets.
How to Use Descendo in Hogwarts Legacy
Using Descendo is fairly straightforward. Hitting an enemy with it will deal damage, and using it on foes that are in the air will cause even more damage. Descendo can be used on levitating objects to bring them back down to the ground and even has special uses against certain enemies like the Loyalist Commander.
Hogwarts Legacy is available now on PC, PS5, and Xbox Series X/S. PS4 and Xbox One ports are scheduled to release on April 4; the Nintendo Switch version is arriving on July 25, 2023.
