Fans of the Harry Potter movies are no doubt familiar with the titular wizard's signature spell, Expelliarmus, and it is no surprise that players can learn and use this spell themselves in Hogwarts Legacy. Expelliarmus is a damage spell that also disarms the target, causing them to lose hold of their wand, sword, or goblin metal armaments. Though its damage-dealing capabilities may not stack up to those of, say, Diffindo or Incendio, the disarming feature makes it one of the most useful spells in the game for combat situations.
In order to learn new spells in Hogwarts Legacy, players must attend classes, complete additional assignments, or learn then I'm secret under the tutelage of Sebastian. In the case of Expelliarmus, it is Defense Against the Dark Arts teacher Professor Hecat who will teach players the spell, but only after they've completed her preliminary assignments.
Completing Professor Hecat's Assignment II
Professor Hecat's second assignment is unlocked after players speak with Jackdaw about the location of the missing pages. In fact, completing this assignment and learning the Disarming Charm is required in order to continue on in the story.
Professor Hecat wants the player to use Incendio on enemies 5 times and successfully dodge roll 10 attacks. These tasks are easy enough, and players can complete them in a single combat encounter against Ashwinders, poachers, or any other enemy groups.
Learning Expelliarmus
Once these assignments are complete, attend Defence Against the Dark Arts class and watch the short cutscene. Once this plays out, Professor Hecat will teach the player Expelliarmus. Follow the button prompts and aim the cursor along the path to complete the mini-game and permanently add the spell to the player's arsenal. Expelliarmus can be equipped to any slot on the player's spell set.
How to Use Expelliarmus
Unlike some other spells in Hogwarts Legacy, Expelliarmus can't be used in exploration or even puzzle-solving and is only really applicable in combat. Still, it should not be overlooked, as it is an incredibly potent combat spell. Against enemies with weapons such as wizards or goblins, Expelliarmus will cause their weapon to fly out of their hands, leaving them unable to attack or defend themselves until they run and pick it up.
Even against enemies without weapons, Expelliarmus still does decent damage on impact. It's also worth noting that Pensieve Sentinel-type enemies take critical damage whenever they don't have their weapons.
Hogwarts Legacy is available now on PC, PS5, and Xbox Series X/S. PS4 and Xbox One ports are scheduled to release on April 4; the Nintendo Switch version is arriving on July 25, 2023.
