Hogwarts Legacy follows the journey of a young fifth-year student during their first year at Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry. Shortly after they arrive at the famed wizarding school, they will be given the freedom to explore the world outside the castle's walls, where they will come across a variety of magical beasts.
Most of the beasts in Hogwarts Legacy are pretty friendly, some can even be rescued and raised in the player's Room of Requirement, but a select few will attack if the protagonist gets too close. The Dark Mongrels found roaming the world are no exception, but players will need to seek them out if they hope to acquire Mongrel Fur.
What Does Mongrel Fur Do?
Once obtained, Mongrel Fur can be used to brew the Edurus Potion, an extremely useful potion that can boost the protagonist's defense for a total of twenty seconds. In order to make an Edurus Potion, the player will need to unlock a Potions Station and then interact with one while in possession of Ashwinder Eggs and Mongrel Fur.
For those who wish to obtain an Edurus Potion without brewing one, they can visit J. Pippin's Potions in Hogsmeade and purchase one for 300 Galleons. J. Pippin will run out of Edurus Potions from time to time, however, so players should familiarize themselves with potion-making if they wish to always have access to the potions they want.
Where To Find Mongrel Fur
There are two ways to obtain Mongrel Fur in Hogwarts Legacy. The easiest way to acquire some is to fast-travel to West Hogsmeade and enter J. Pippin's Potions. J. Pippin sells Mongrel Fur for 50 Galleons, so those who only wish to acquire a few should buy them from him at his store.
However, the most reliable way to acquire Mongrel Fur in Hogwarts Legacy is to seek out the Dark Mongrels roaming around the map and defeat them. These wolf-like enemies can be found pretty frequently by exploring the world of Hogwarts Legacy, but they are always guaranteed to spawn at Mongrel Lairs.
To find a Mongrel Lair, the player should fast-travel to the East Hogsmeade Valley Floo Flame, mount their broom, and fly slightly southeast until they reach the railway line. Just on the other side, inside the forest, awaits a pack of Dark Mongrels.
Defeating one Dark Mongrel is pretty straightforward, but surviving a group attack can be a little difficult if the player approaches the battle unprepared. The best way to vanquish these enemies is to maintain a safe distance while dodging and parrying their attacks. Once the pack has been slain, the player should cast the Revelio spell to check if any of the Dark Mongrels dropped Mongrel Fur after they were beaten.
Hogwarts Legacy is available now on PC, PS5, and Xbox Series X/S. PS4 and Xbox One versions will release on April 4, and a Switch version will release on July 25.
