Hogwarts Legacy players will find a ton of gear as they progress through the game's story, each of which has a specific rarity and matching color. Though gaming veterans may be able to instinctively figure out what this rarity color scheme means, there are experienced and new players alike that may be confused by the system. Understanding item rarity is important, though, as it will enable players to equip the best gear and ultimately utilize the best traits Hogwarts Legacy has to offer.

Finding and equipping powerful gear is an important aspect of Hogwarts Legacy, as players that ignore this part of the game will likely find themselves overwhelmed by enemies rather easily. Hats, robes, scarves, gloves, and even glasses can all improve the player's Offence and Defence stats, allowing them to deal more damage to enemies and take more damage without dying.

Rarity Types

There are five types of gear rarities in the game: Standard, Well-Appointed, Superb, Extraordinary, and Legendary. As a general rule, each rarity type is more powerful than the last, with Standard being the weakest and Legendary being the strongest. That said, it's worth noting that Well-Appointed Gear can have better stats than Legendary Gear, provided the Well-Appointed Gear is of a higher level. In condensed form, players simply need to remember the following:

Standard Gear (Grey Rarity)

Standard Gear is the equipment that every player starts with in the tutorial of Hogwarts Legacy. Ironically, it is technically the rarest type of gear in the game, as it is only obtainable one time upon character creation, whereas every other gear type can be found elsewhere.

Standard Gear has no background color, provides no stat boosts, and cannot be upgraded or imbued with traits. It sells for 30 Galleons, so it's best to just sell or discard these items as soon as possible.

Well-Appointed Gear (Green Rarity)

Well-Appointed Gear is gear with a green background. These items are akin to common rarity items in other games and are the weakest item type that actually provides stats.

These items boost Offence or Defence a mild amount, cannot be upgraded at the Enchanted Loom, and cannot be imbued with any traits. They sell for 60 Galleons a piece, and since players will find a lot of Well-Appointed Gear in their travels, this is a good way to make money in Hogwarts Legacy.

Superb Gear (Blue Rarity)

Superb Gear is gear with a blue background, and players should think of Superb Gear as relating to what most other games would classify as rare.

As expected, Superb Gear has better stats than Well-Appointed Gear of the same level, with the added benefit of being upgradeable at the Enchanted Loom and having a trait slot. Superb Gear is only powerful enough to be imbued with level 1 traits and sells for 90 Galleons.

Extraordinary Gear (Purple Rarity)

Extraordinary Gear is gear with a purple background, sharing a resemblance to what is normally called epic rarity in other games. Following the pattern, Extraordinary Gear has better stats than both Superb and Well-Appointed Gear of the same level and can also be upgraded at the Enchanted Loom.

Notably, this rarity of gear can be imbued with level 2 traits, making it even more powerful than lower rarities. This gear sells for 150 Galleons.

Legendary Gear (Gold Rarity)

Legendary Gear is gear with a gold or orange background and is the most powerful equipment in Hogwarts Legacy. Its stats are higher than those of Extraordinary Gear and anything of a lower rarity so long as the items are the same level, and it can even be upgraded further at the Enchanted Loom.

What really sets Legendary Gear apart from other rarities is that it can be imbued with traits of any level, even powerful level 3 traits that greatly increase a character's effectiveness in combat. It can be sold to most stores for 200 Galleons.

Hogwarts Legacy is available now on PC, PS5, and Xbox Series X/S. PS4 and Xbox One ports are scheduled to release on April 4; the Nintendo Switch version is arriving on July 25, 2023.
