Mooncalves are one of many Magical Beasts in Hogwarts Legacy that players are able to rescue and rehome. They are first encountered and rescued during the quest called "The Elf, The Nab-Sack, and the Loom," but there are a lot of other opportunities to find and rescue Mooncalves. Not only are Mooncalves adorable, but they also provide players with Mooncalf Fur when properly cared for. This item is used in upgrading and enchanting Hogwarts Legacy players' equipment, making Mooncalves an important part of growing more powerful as players progress through the game.

Mooncalves are strange-looking beasts that can be easily identified by their enormous eyes, which likely aid them in seeing in the dark. As the name suggests, Mooncalves can only be found at nighttime in Hogwarts Legacy, where they will perform dances under the moonlight. They are described as having a "shy personality," so players should be gentle with them.

Where to Find Mooncalf Dens

To find any den, simply comb the world map for a symbol that looks like a Beast's paw and hover over it to find what kind of Magical Beast lives there. In total, there are five Mooncalf Dens, but the closest one is just northwest of Hogwarts.

There's even a Floo Flame location here called Mooncalf Den, and players should have already visited it as part of the quest with Deek. Including this one, there are three Mooncalf Dens north of Hogwarts, one to the southwest near the Feldcroft region, and one to the south near the Coastal Cavern.

Rescuing Mooncalves and Getting Mooncalf Fur

Capturing a Mooncalf can be slightly challenging, but players should still be able to do it with minimal effort. Approach a Mooncalf carefully as they will run away if they spot the player, and use the Nab-sack. Players will need to press the button three times before the rescue is complete, and the Mooncalf is likely to run out of range before then. Using Levioso or Arresto Momentum will stop the beast in its tracks, allowing players to finish the rescue. Players can also rescue a shiny Mooncalf, denoted by the star next to the gender marker, which are white in color. Caring for Mooncalves provides players with five Mooncalf Fur, used to upgrade equipment at the Loom.

The player can sell any extra Mooncalves they may have rescued to Brood and Peck for 120 Galleons each or just release them to the wild from the inventory menu if they don't want to make the trip to Hogsmeade. The Toy Chest Spellcraft purchased from Tomes and Scrolls has Moon Balls, which just so happen to be the Mooncalf's favorite toy.

Hogwarts Legacy is available now on PC, PS5, and Xbox Series X/S. PS4 and Xbox One ports are scheduled to release on April 4, and the Nintendo Switch version arrives July 25, 2023.
